AFS 265 Religion, Race, and Social Justice
This course examines the complex impact of religion on the politics of race in the American context. We will analyze how race, class, gender, and other social categories intersect with religion to maintain unjust social systems, and also how these intersections frame powerful acts of resistance. We will trace the historical roots of this intersection of American religion and race from slavery and Jim Crowism to contemporary society. The curriculum foregrounds African American voices through a variety of materials, including academic texts, documentaries, and social media.
