HI 381 Changemakers: The Global Context of Activism
Changemakers in civil-society activism, such as Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), are a crucial component and a revealing characteristic of the strength and effectiveness of a country's civil society. Examining their histories outside of the U.S. gives us a window into global culture, values, and modes of everyday life, and into notions about "charity" and "public good" in a given society. We will use India as a case study to develop a set of questions about how changemakers function in different societies, examining how researchers and activists partner with organizations in different parts of the world to address pressing environmental, economic, social, and cultural-production issues.
