This course explores the history of work, workers, and working-class life and labor in the United States from the founding of the first European colonies to the beginning of the twentieth century: bound and free labor in colonial America, the transformation of urban worklife in the decades preceding the Civil War, slavery and class formation in the antebellum South, the effects of immigration on American workers, and the impact of race and gender on workers' solidarity. Credit will not be given for both ±á±õÌý449 and ±á±õÌý549.
