HI 561 Slavery and the American South 1607-1861
Examines the rise of a unique Southern region in the United States, and how the planter elite used slavery to dominate and shape southern life. Colonial antecedents will be explored, but majority of course is on the development white southerner's identity as a conscious minority during the antebellum era; the lives and aspirations of the enslaved; the evolution of racial ideas; and the road to disunion. Credit will not be given for both ±á±õÌý461 and ±á±õÌý561
