English (BA): Teacher Education Concentration
Core Curriculum
The undergraduate major in English is built around aÌý12-hour c´Ç°ù±ðÌý³¦´Ç²Ô²õ¾±²õ³Ù¾±²Ô²µÌý´Ç´ÚÌýtwo literature classes and two courses fromÌýthe followingÌýcategories:ÌýFilm, Linguistics,ÌýCreative Writing,Ìýand Rhetoric. Students in the Teacher Education complete the core by taking ENG 328:ÌýLinguistics for Education Professionals and ENG 455:ÌýLiteracy in the U.S. In addition to theÌý12-³ó´Ç³Ü°ùÌýcore, students takeÌýan additional 27Ìýhours of course work inÌýthe major, including two courses in literary theory, an additional literature course studying an author or genre, and five English electives.
Students in the Teacher Education program (TED) take 31 hours of professional coursework in addition to the 39-hours in English required by the TED concentration.Ìý Formal applications are required for admission to Teacher Education candidacy and for admission to the Professional Semester. Students who complete the program's academic and licensure requirements are eligible to apply for certification to teach English in secondary schools in North Carolina.

Major Grade Point Average (MGPA) Requirements Courses meeting departmental requirements must receive a grade of C- or better. A minimum MGPA and overall, cumulative GPA of 2.5 is required for students to be eligible for teacher licensure.
Career Opportunities
A degree in English provides both liberal education and practical knowledge about the role of writing and language in the everyday world. It leads to careers in such fields as teaching, journalism, advertising, public relations, personnel management, technical writing, business writing, and creative writing.
